Batteries from GNB Industrial Power, a division of Exide Technologies, have been selected for the forklift fleet at a major car-manufacturing facility in France. The carmaker’s goals in its choice of battery included reducing total cost of ownership and limiting the number of battery changes required daily. After an extensive selection process, it chose GNB TENSOR, a high-performance lead-acid battery with formidable power density and energy content. The carmaker’s choice of battery will lead to an immediate decrease in operating costs.
Battery changes are a major overhead for the carmaker. Every time a battery needs to be changed, the forklift driver has to travel to a charging room, switch the battery and then return to their location. TENSOR’s high energy content allows it to go much longer without being changed or recharged. So switching to TENSOR reduces this overhead substantially.
Exide is an original-equipment battery manufacturer, designing the latest starter and start-stop batteries for leading carmakers. This OE experience also makes the company ideally placed to assist the automotive industry with energy solutions for material handling, leveraging its industry experience and know-how. GNB Industrial Power provided the carmaker in France with detailed tests and figures to show the financial and operating performance that could be expected from its proposed solution, all based on real-world insights.
TENSOR is a next-generation lead-acid battery that offers exceptional performance for heavyduty applications. Heavy-duty applications have typically been the preserve of internal combustion forklifts, but this is no longer the case thanks to the power of TENSOR. Switching to TENSOR and away from internal combustion provides a range of benefits, including environmental improvements, reductions in total cost of ownership, and even the ability to reduce noise levels at your facility.
TENSOR offers exceptionally low recharging times, and can attain full recharge from 80% depth of discharge in just 4 hours, thanks to outstanding charge acceptance combined with GNB’s proprietary Z-profile charging algorithm. TENSOR also supports multi-opportunity charging. This prolongs the time the battery can go between full charges, helping to reduce operating costs and improve productivity. Some businesses can even remove battery changes entirely by fully leveraging TENSOR’s multi-opportunity charging capability.
The battery also offers a long operating life, increased running times, and impressive energy efficiency. It is suited to a wide range of challenging environments, including high-rack facilities,24/7 and outdoor operations. It can also be used in cold storage environments, where it exceeds standard traction battery performance by more than 50%.The carmaker requires around 100 forklifts and batteries. GNB TENSOR batteries will be fitted on the fleet’s most demanding counter-balance trucks, and will account for around 30% of the total order size. In addition to batteries, GNB will provide a monitoring system, chargers, charger room equipment, and on-going maintenance services as part of a total energy solution.
GNB offers a range of battery technologies, including flooded lead-acid, gel, and lithium. Each technology provides its own key benefits and features, allowing businesses to select the option that will lead to the lowest total cost of ownership. GNB believes in the importance of offering a complete solution, and provides accompanying know-how and consulting to help businesses get the most out of its technology. This includes energy-efficient chargers and accessories that help to maximize the performance and lifespan of its batteries and save operating costs.
